Why this matters

Getting involved in sport from a young age has many health benefits, if you can access it. The high cost of youth sport can be prohibitive for many, creating a world of haves and have nots. Renata Simril, CEO of LA84 Foundation, believes sport is for every young person, and it's something she is fighting for everyday.

“If you’re going to engage in this work, make sure you have the courage and the fortitude to stick with it.”

Renata Simril is the president and CEO of the LA84 Foundation which supports youth sports programs in southern California. She has been leading discussions on how the COVID-19 pandemic and racial injustice have exacerbated health disparities between White people and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). BIPOC are more likely to experience pre-existing conditions that increase vulnerability to COVID-19 including hypertension, asthma, obesity, and diabetes. Sport can serve as a tool to reduce the prevalence and severity of these health issues especially among youth who identify as BIPOC. It must be accessible to everyone.
