People to Follow in 2021: Dr. Ahada McCummings
Why this matters
Barriers for girls' participation in sport was a major issue before the pandemic. Coach and researcher, Dr. Ahada McCummings challenges us all to examine what the long term impact this pandemic will have on the future of girls in sport.
"What’s this impact going to be on females, on our young girls who are already concerned about safety...about transportation...what’s going to happen now?"
Dr. Ahada McCummings is the National Director of Strategic Partnerships for Up2Us Sports, an organization working to identify and train coaches in underserved communities with an emphasis on trauma informed care. Dr. McCummings emphasizes the importance of sport for young girls who are twice as likely as their male counterparts to drop out of youth sports. Up2Us has partnered with Adidas to create Keep Girls in Sport, a digital curriculum designed to educate coaches on empowering girl athletes by fostering supportive relationships and team environments.
