People to Follow in 2021: Coach Dawn Staley
Why this matters
Coach Dawn Staley is making an impact on and off the court speaking out for racial justice and allowing space for her players to have a voice. Something that not everyone welcomed in her community.
“I’m open to have those uncomfortable conversations if they’re going to lead to systemic change, if they're going to lead to long term solutions.”
Dawn Staley is an Olympian, WNBA All-Star, and the head coach of the University of South Carolina’s women’s basketball team. When she spoke out against racial injustice and ineffective diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, she was widely criticized. But she’s determined to keep using her voice to advocate for systemic change and set an example for her team and community and joined her team at a protest for racial justice in 2020.
